Itraconazole capsules are used to treat fungal infections in the lungs that can spread throughout the body. Itraconazole capsules are also used to treat fungal infections of the fingernails. Itraconazole tablets and capsules are used to treat fungal infections of the toenails. Itraconazole is in a class of antifungals called triazoles. It works by slowing the growth of fungi that cause infection. Itraconazole is also sometimes used to treat other types of fungal infections and to prevent fungal infections in people who have human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
Indication and Usage:
Itraconazole capsules are indicated for the treatment of:-
Ã¢âÂ Vulvovaginal candidiasis
Ã¢âÂ Pityriasis Versicolor, dermatomycosis, fungal keratitis, oral candidiasis
Ã¢âÂ Onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes and/or yeasts
Ã¢âÂ Systemic mycoses, including aspergillosis and non-invasive systemic candidiasis (without underlying Immunosuppression), histoplasmosis, sporotrichosis, paracoccidioidomycosis, blastomycosis, and other rarely occurring systemic or tropical mycoses
Posology And Method of Administration:
Ã¢âÂ Route of administration: Oral use.
Ã¢âÂ For maximum drug absorption itraconazole should be taken immediately following a meal.
Ã¢âÂ Capsules must be swallowed whole.
Ã¢âÂ Life-threatening adverse effects occurred when itraconazole was combined (no longer available in the U.S.), pimozide, quinidine, dofetilide, or levomethadyl. Therefore, itraconazole should not be combined with these drugs.
Ã¢âÂ Itraconazole interacts with warfarin, tolbutamide, glyburide, glipizide, protease inhibitors (for example, indinavir, ritonavir , saquinavir ), midazolam, and HMG CoA-reductase inhibitors.
Ã¢âÂ Swelling, rapid weight gain
Ã¢âÂ Problems with hearing
Ã¢âÂ Pain in your upper stomach, itching, loss of appetite, weakness
Ã¢âÂ Itraconazole capsules are contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to itraconazole or to any of the excipients and also during pregnancy and during breast feeding.
Ã¢âÂ Itraconazole can cause congestive heart failure (condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood through the body). Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had heart failure and also if there is any history of liver and kidney diseases.
Itraconazole capsules may cause dizziness. This effect may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines.
Itraconazole is used in treatment of infections due to most yeasts, as well as moulds. Its major advantages over fluconazole are its activity particularly against most Aspergillus isolates and a subset of fluconazole-resistant Candida strains. Thereby, Itraconazole is a more preferred medication for fungal infections.
